Zirconia and alumina products have spent millions of part-hours in space with no failures. Extremely low thermal conductivity (K), phase stability of YSZ, and high alpha alumina make our products the time-tested choice for heat protection and battery separation. With no phase changes during extremely rapid temperature cycles, the instruments and metals behind the insulation will not experience the high heat and forces of take-off and reentry.
Some known uses of our material include:
- Buster M-35 for a propulsion test rig for temperatures of 1500°C+ for short intervals.
- ZYF and ZYW for a backup insulation layer of heat shielding as both thermal protection and reinforcement.
- ZYZ for instrumentation protection. The insulation is designed to protect positioning hardware from the heat generated by friction.
- ZYFB-3 rings for hot face insulation for turbine blade manufacturing. The rings are situated at the directional solidification area of the furnace.
- FBD for crucibles designed to hold material samples for testing. These samples are tested under extreme conditions to simulate launch.
- ZYF as an exhaust tube insulator.
- Rare earth oxide fibers as insulation in power generation devices for interplanetary applications.
- FBD in TPS design.
Material is in stock, and samples are available for testing.
